Emotional
Foresight

Making possible futures emotionally present, while we still have time to question and change them.

Read the definition

Emotional Foresight is the practice of using immersive and sensory experiences to encounter possible futures emotionally in the present.

Its purpose is to discover what a possible future evokes in us now and to build an emotional memory of possibility that can inform present choices.

Three ways of meeting the future.

01

Sensing the future

What might be changing?

Noticing signals, patterns, risks, opportunities or bodily sensations before they form a complete picture.

02

Affective foresight

How do I think that future will make me feel?

Intellectually anticipating or estimating a future emotional state:

“I think I will feel excited, relieved or afraid when this happens.”

03

Emotional Foresight

What am I actually feeling as I experience that future now?

Entering a possible future through imagination, story, image, sound, film or embodied simulation until a real emotion arises in the present:

“I can feel the excitement, tension, pride, grief or resistance this future evokes in me now.”

The emotion is connected to meaning, memory, identity and context. It may reveal what we hope the future makes possible, what we fear losing and what must be protected as the future becomes a target, budget or deliverable.

The Emotional Foresight Sequence

Five actions that turn a felt future into a repeatable decision practice.

01

Reveal

Reveal the different futures people are already carrying before the room converges around its most powerful voice.

02

Recognise

Recognise where meaning, emotion, agency and interpretation coincide, split or disappear.

03

Render

Give selected futures human and sensory form through scenes, images, voices, sound and film.

04

Rehearse

Rehearse the Honest Passage through pressure, uncertainty, failure, loss, adaptation and recovery.

This prevents the future from becoming a polished fantasy that disappears at the first difficulty.

05

Return

Return to the shared maps, scenes or films when a consequential decision appears.

Ask:

  • Which future are we carrying into this decision?
  • What must this decision protect?
  • Does this choice still fit the future we want?

Connect Return back to Reveal, because decisions create new experiences, interpretations and signals.

Return is what turns an emotional experience into a decision practice, rather than leaving it as artistic storytelling.

“We may understand a future intellectually and still keep it safely outside our lives. Feeling it changes what becomes difficult to ignore.”

The work began with a practical question: can a possible future become emotionally real enough to leave a memory before it happens?

Emotional Foresight did not begin as a finished theory. It grew through films, experiments, physiological data, individual experiences and group pilots.

Making future scenarios visible

The journey began with AI-generated foresight films exploring collective intelligence, scenario planning and decentralised education. Instead of describing possible futures in reports, I turned them into cinematic experiences.

What changes when we experience a possible future instead of only analysing it?

One of the films, Exploring Futures: Scenario Planning in Collective Consciousness, was later screened five times at the international Cartoons About the Future Festival in Moscow.

The first Resonant Future Self pilot

The question then became personal: could someone experience several possible versions of their own future and recognise which one carried meaning for them?

This led to the Resonant Future Self Framework, combining deep self-inquiry, six personalised future narratives, AI-generated films, immersive viewing and physiological observation. The framework and the results of its first single-participant pilot were presented publicly for the first time at the Futures4Europe Conference in Vienna.

Connecting the work to collective emotion ecosystems

I was invited to participate in Emotion Ecosystems 2040, a two-day foresight workshop at Conacul Cozieni near Bucharest. Hosted by UEFISCDI within the EU-funded Eye of Europe project, the workshop explored how emotional currents, technologies and social tensions may shape individuals and collectives by 2040.

It placed the emerging work on felt futures inside a wider question: how are emotions produced, amplified and transformed across communities, institutions and technological systems?

From experiment to peer-reviewed framework

The individual framework was presented at AIMEDIA 2025, the First International Conference on AI-based Media Innovation. The resulting paper, written with Normen Schack, formalised the connection between strategic foresight, immersive storytelling, AI, experiential learning and biofeedback.

Testing the approach in new contexts

Elements of the approach were adapted for children and young people through Die Kiste von Morgen in Hannover and Dora & the City That Feels in Bratislava. The Bratislava experience was delivered with YouthWatch as part of an EU- and Erasmus+-funded workshop. These experiments explored how stories, characters and immersive media could help different groups connect emotionally with futures that might otherwise remain abstract.

From individual resonance to collective experience

The next question was no longer only: which future resonates with one person? It became: what happens when several people enter the same future, but feel and interpret it differently?

This led to Felt Futures: An Experiment in Sensing 2032, the first group adaptation of the Resonant Future Self Framework. Five participants developed personalised experiences of a shared future horizon. Their films were then experienced and discussed within a larger group of researchers at AIMEDIA 2026 in Nice.

Recognising the future in the room

At Futures4Europe 2026 in Rome, the next version will expand the Nice pilot into a wider participatory process. Pre-conference contributions, personalised films, an immersive installation and facilitated group reflection will be brought together to explore what different emotional responses can reveal about a shared possible future.

Emotional Foresight grew from a simple but persistent question: what does a possible future evoke in us now, while we still have time to question it, choose differently and change what comes next?

Her path from interior architecture to virtual reality and future experience design informs a central conviction: people do not move toward a future simply because they understand it. They need to recognise themselves inside it.

A distinct practice, transparently named.

The expression “emotional foresight” has appeared previously in different contexts. This site documents the distinct practice developed by Iuliana Adina Apostol: making possible futures emotionally present through immersive experiences and treating the response that surfaces as meaningful input for present decisions.

Emotional Foresight in brief.

What is Emotional Foresight?
Emotional Foresight is the practice of using immersive and sensory experiences to encounter possible futures emotionally in the present. It builds an emotional memory of possibility that can inform present choices.
How is it different from affective forecasting?
Affective forecasting estimates how we expect to feel when something happens. Emotional Foresight asks what a possible future actually evokes in us now through an immersive or sensory encounter.
Who is developing Emotional Foresight as a practice?
This site documents the distinct practice developed by Iuliana Adina Apostol through films, experiments, physiological observation, individual experiences and group pilots, and developed through HeliosTree GmbH.
